Carnegie Mellon AI Safety Initiative

Working towards a safer future in the presence of powerful artificial intelligence

AI safety is one of the most critical challenges of our time.

As artificial intelligence systems become more capable and ubiquitous, ensuring they remain aligned with human values and beneficial to society becomes increasingly important. Our community brings together researchers, students, and enthusiasts who are passionate about addressing these challenges through rigorous research, meaningful collaboration, and thoughtful education.

Explore the foundations of AI safety through our AI Alignment Fundamentals program, which covers technical research challenges, or our AI Governance Fundamentals program, which explores policy and societal implications. We also run an advanced reading group for students who have completed our fundamentals programs.

We believe that making progress on AI safety requires diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches. Our collaborative research programs meet you at whatever stage of your journey you're at: the CASI Research Fellowship gives you the freedom to explore your ideas and find collaborators, while the CASI Research Scholars program offers structured research on scoped projects with expert PhD mentorship.

Join us as we work together to build a future where AI systems remain beneficial, controllable, and aligned with human flourishing.
